Proof of lawful residence for non-EU citizens in the Schengen Area after April 10, 2026

In connection with the use of the Entry/Exit System (EES), there will be changes regarding how you provide proof of lawful residence in the Schengen Area when you apply for a verification certificate. April 10, 2026, is the effective date for these changes. A distinction is made between entries and exits before and after this date.

Below you will find information on proof of lawful residence for non-EU citizens in the Schengen Area

  • Residence Permit:
  • If you hold a residence permit for a Schengen member state, this document serves as proof of your lawful residence in the Schengen Area.
  • Nationals subject to visa requirements entering and/or exiting before April 10, 2026:
  • Visa sticker in the passport along with a physical entry stamp.
  • Visa-required nationals entering and/or exiting after April 10, 2026:
  • Visa sticker in the passport along with a printout of the data and results page of the EES Visa Calculator, as well as flight tickets/boarding passes.
  • Visa-required nationals who have not entered prior to submitting the application:
  • Visa sticker in the passport along with a printout of the data and results page of the EES visa calculator for the planned stay in the Schengen Area.
  • Visa-exempt nationals entering and/or exiting before April 10, 2026:
  • Physical entry stamp in the passport.
  • Visa-exempt nationals with entry and/or exit after April 10, 2026:
  • Printout of the data and results page of the EES visa calculator, as well as flight tickets/boarding passes.
  • Visa-exempt nationals who have not entered the Schengen Area prior to submitting their application:
  • Printout of the data and results page of the EES Visa Calculator for the planned stay in the Schengen Area.

1. We require the following documents:

Every bridal couple has their own unique situation and therefore needs to submit different documents for their marriage. Here you can find out which documents are required.

The following are no longer required: certificate of no impediment (marriage certificate) and registration certificate! The birth certificates of both partners are never required.

However, we do require the following documents from you:

  1. Copy of passport for bride and groom, all pages complete, including blank pages and cover, in colour and good resolution as a PDF file or identity card (valid for EU citizens) also as a photo in good resolution or PDF file. All margins must be clearly visible.
  2. Copy of the final divorce decree or divorce certificate (all pages complete): If one or both of you were previously married, we require the complete divorce decree with the court's note of legal validity. It must include the note: ‘This judgment is final since (date)’ and so on.
    All divorce decrees issued outside Europe (except the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Australia) must be submitted with an apostille or legalisation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country and the Danish embassy there.
  3. Death: Widows or widowers must submit the death certificate issued by the relevant registry office. Death certificates issued outside Europe (except for the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia) must be submitted with an apostille or legalisation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country and the Danish embassy there.
  4. Copy of visa (Schengen visa, residence permit or temporary residence permit) in colour and in good resolution for entry into Denmark (very important) Citizens outside the EC must be able to present a Schengen entry stamp in their passport when registering.

    PLEASE NOTE - THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT SUFFICIENT:
    Tolerance permit - replacement ID - residence permit or similar!

  5. The application for marriage, which must be completed and signed by both persons. You can download the necessary file under the notes! The form must be signed by hand, no electronic signatures!
  6. Power of attorney, which must be completed and signed by both persons. You can download the necessary file under the instructions! The form must be signed by hand, no electronic signatures!
  7. All required documents must be brought to Denmark in the original and presented to the local municipality.
  8. If the couple has children together, the children's birth certificates are required!
