What is an apostille?

The short answer: An apostille is a certificate of authenticity affixed to a public document. For a Danish marriage certificate, it is issued exclusively by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Udenrigsministeriet). (Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Embassy in Berlin): Legalization and Apostille. um.dk)

It is usually not required for recognition in Germany (Federal Foreign Office / Federal Office for Foreign Affairs: “Germans Getting Married in Denmark” (as of December 2018). bfaa.diplo.de)

It is particularly important for use in non-EU countries (for example, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the U.S.) or if a government agency specifically requires it.
