These documents are required to get married in Denmark

As of April 10, 2026, new rules apply regarding the documentation required to prove lawful residence in the Schengen Area, which is necessary to obtain a marriage license.

The following are no longer required: a certificate of no impediment to marriage and a certificate of residence!
The following are never required: birth certificates for both partners.

Proof of lawful residence for non-EU citizens in the Schengen Area after April 10, 2026

In connection with the use of the Entry/Exit System (EES), there will be changes regarding how you must provide proof of lawful residence in the Schengen Area when applying for a certificate of examination. April 10, 2026, is the effective date for these changes. A distinction is made between entries and exits occurring before and after this date.

Below you will find information on proving lawful residence in the Schengen Area for non-EU citizens.

Residence permit:
If you hold a residence permit for a Schengen member state, this document serves as proof of your lawful residence in the Schengen Area.
Nationals subject to visa requirements who enter and/or exit before April 10, 2026:
A visa sticker in the passport along with a physical entry stamp.
Nationals subject to visa requirements who enter and/or exit after April 10, 2026:
A visa sticker in the passport along with a printout of the data and results page from the EES Visa Calculator, as well as flight tickets/boarding passes.
Nationals subject to visa requirements who have not yet entered the Schengen Area prior to submitting their application:
A visa sticker in the passport along with a printout of the data and results page from the EES Visa Calculator for the planned stay in the Schengen Area.
Visa-exempt nationals who entered and/or exited before April 10, 2026:
Physical entry stamp in the passport.
Visa-exempt nationals who entered and/or exited after April 10, 2026:
Printout of the data and results page of the EES visa calculator, as well as flight tickets/boarding passes.
Visa-exempt nationals who have not entered the Schengen Area prior to submitting their application:
A printout of the data and results page from the EES visa calculator for the planned stay in the Schengen Area.

Documents we require to schedule a wedding date:

Every couple’s situation is unique, so we need to submit different documents for a wedding ceremony.

Required Documents

1. Copies of passports

For the bride and groom’s passports, all pages must be copied in full color and high resolution (including blank pages and the cover) and saved as PDF files. Alternatively, the identity card (for EU citizens) with a photo in high resolution may be saved as a PDF file. All margins must be clearly visible.

2. Copy of the final divorce decree or divorce certificate (all pages)

If the bride and/or groom have been married previously, the complete divorce decree, bearing the court’s notation that it has become final, is required. It must include the following notation: “This decree has been final since (date),” and so on.
All divorce decrees issued outside of Europe (excluding the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia) must be submitted with an apostille or legalization from the foreign ministry of the country in question and the Danish embassy there.

In the event of the death of a former spouse, the death certificate issued by the relevant civil registry office must be submitted. Death certificates issued outside of Europe (with the exception of the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia) must be submitted with an apostille or legalization from the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Embassy there.

3. Copy of the visa (Schengen visa, residence permit, or provisional residence permit)

The bride’s and/or groom’s visas must be presented in color and in high resolution for entry into Denmark (very important). Non-EU citizens must be able to present a Schengen entry stamp in their passport at the time of registration.

PLEASE NOTE—THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE:
Toleration status—substitute ID—residence permit, or similar documents!

4. Application for Marriage

The marriage application must be completed and signed by both spouses with a handwritten signature. No electronic signatures!

The power of attorney must be completed by both individuals and signed by hand. No electronic signatures!
